Communications Associate - Spring 2018

The Kaizen Company (Kaizen) is a small international development consulting firm located in Washington, DC. We aspire to transform the nature and impact of development assistance and work to strengthen organizations and institutions through innovative approaches to organizational development, reform, and change. Kaizen is currently seeking an undergraduate or graduate student to join our team as a Communications Associate (intern) for Spring 2018 (January – May, with the possibility to extend through August).

The Communications Associate will work with Kaizen staff to develop marketing strategies and deliverables that present Kaizen's work effectively. This internship is intended to be primarily a learning experience with any contributions to Kaizen's work by the Associate furthering their education and/or career aspirations. Illustrative responsibilities and benefits are listed below.

This internship is best suited for Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or Public Relations students looking for hands-on experience in various aspects of marketing and communications in the international development context. The internship comes with a modest stipend to cover lunch and transportation. It is expected that the selected Communications Associate will work part-time (minimum 20 hours per week) to full-time if feasible for that candidate. 

This internship is intended for DC-based students only. U.S. work authorization required.


  • Based on acquired understanding of Kaizen project outcomes, craft compelling, evidence-based stories that drive marketing strategies targeted to clients, partners, and beneficiaries
  • Create and revise project outreach materials in the form of infographics, short articles, one-pagers, etc.
  • Engage in new business processes through development of graphic and written elements for proposals for new projects, such as visually captivating diagrams and charts illustrating concepts and approaches
  • Contribute and coordinate social media and digital marketing content
  • Other tasks as identified


  • Gain in-depth knowledge of Kaizen's project portfolio across a variety of sectors and geographies through conversations with project managers and technical staff
  • Build and/or expand creative portfolio with real-world deliverables
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and collaborative office environment
  • Explore opportunities to take on a diverse array of tasks by working with a growing small business

The ideal candidate:

  • Is an entrepreneurial self-starter and works well without excessive supervision
  • Is currently enrolled in a degree program (required)
  • Has taken coursework in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field 
  • Possesses strong English writing and editing skills 
  • Has demonstrated interest in international development
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and/or web development a plus
